Hey there, {{first_name | friend}},

I've been a proud PTA mom since 2023. I love the camaraderie, the breakfast tacos and coffee at our meetings, and the school spirit. And this year, I got to speak at the National PTA Convention in Pittsburgh. Al Roker was there, too. No idea he was such a comedian (his best joke: he wants AI to be written as “A-I” because he is tired of all the headlines that make it look like he’s the one taking all the jobs and pushing humanity to the brink. I didn’t realize how hard A-I must be for someone named A-L!)

I was invited because of something I talk about every week right here: AI literacy for parents matters, and it matters now. AI is already in your kids' classrooms, in the apps they use every day, and in the tools embedded in Canva, Google Docs, Spotify, and their favorite games. We cannot opt out of this conversation. The only question is whether we show up to it prepared.

At the convention, I walked 100+ PTA leaders through a framework for talking about AI at home and at school. Check out my slides here, the National PTA’s Position Statement on AI here, and a get head start on talking to your PTA about it in this week’s prompts below.

🤖 Prompts for Keeping Up with Kids' Tech Lives

Prompt 1: Decode the Tech

Act as a tech educator speaking to a curious parent with no tech background. Explain what [INSERT AI TOOL NAME, E.G. CHATGPT / GEMINI / COPILOT / GROK] does, how kids are actually using it, and what a parent should know before their child aged [INSERT AGE] uses it. Format the output as a simple explainer with three sections: What it is, How kids use it, and What to watch for.

Mom Tip: I did this recently for Canva. Even though I use the tool regularly, I wasn’t sure about letting my 8-year old run free with it once given the embedded AI tools. Here’s what Claude had to say about it.

Prompt 2: Build Your Family's AI Agreement

Act as a family communication coach. Help me create a family AI agreement with my [INSERT AGE(S)] year old(s). Include guidelines around homework use, honesty about AI use, and how we'll handle mistakes. Our current family rules around tech include [INSERT CURRENT RULES AND BOUNDARIES]. Format it as a short, easy-to-read list we can print, sign and put on the fridge.

Mom Tip: The families who navigate AI well aren't the most tech-savvy… they're the most communicative. This prompt starts that conversation, and if you’d like to see my family’s AI agreement, I’m sharing it here

Prompt 3: Prep for the School Conversation

Act as an experienced PTA advocate and parent educator. Help me prepare talking points for a conversation with my child's PTA, teacher, or principal about how AI is being addressed in the classroom. My questions and concerns are [INSERT YOUR THOUGHTS]. Format the output as 3–5 conversational talking points I can use in a meeting or email.

Mom Tip: You don't need to be an AI expert to advocate for your kid - starting the conversation is enough. You can also leverage the National PTA’s position statement on AI here.

📰 AI Safety in the News

Common Sense Media just published the most important AI research for parents I've seen this year. They surveyed more than 1,000 kids ages 9 to 17 and found that nearly half have never had a conversation with their parents about AI safety. And while three-quarters of kids say their school has discussed how they can and cannot use AI, just over half have actually been taught how to use it safely.

One more note: Common Sense Media has officially rated Grok, the AI tool from xAI, as unsafe for kids, and is petitioning X (the social media platform formerly known as Twitter) for safeguards for kids. If you feel compelled by this, please consider adding your name to this petition.

📣 Want Me at Your School's PTA?

I don't just do national conferences. I would love to speak to your state or local PTA, whether it's a family AI night, a parent education event, or a community keynote.

If your school community would like to help families and teachers better navigate the AI era, let's chat.

Until next time,

Sarah

P.S. Hey Houston-area parents - I’ll be in town for an evening of AI to reduce the mental load with The Clearhead Co. and I’d love to see you there! Get details here and grab your ticket before they sell out.

I’m Sarah, mom of 3 girls, MBA, and AI strategist. I created AI-Empowered Mom to share practical, responsible ways AI can help lighten the mental load of parenthood. I’m so glad you’re here.

Your prompts are leaving out 80% of what you're thinking.

When you type a prompt, you summarize. When you speak one, you explain. Wispr Flow captures your full reasoning — constraints, edge cases, examples, tone — and turns it into clean, structured text you paste into ChatGPT, Claude, or any AI tool. The difference shows up immediately. More context in, fewer follow-ups out.
